Fisher Plows
This month’s Harry’s Choice Award goes to Fisher Plows. If you’ve spent any time in Maine in the winter, you’ve seen those bright yellow Fisher Plows hanging off the front end of trucks. That yellow plow with the Fisher Splash logo is everywhere once snow season arrives, attesting to the popularity of this brand. What you might not know is that Fisher Plows are built right here in Maine at a factory located in Rockland. And if you do know that, you might not know that many of the people working in that factory are hard-core sportsmen, especially when it comes to hunting and fishing.
I had the opportunity to tour the Fisher factory recently and was greatly impressed. I suspect that everyone familiar with the Fisher plows knows they make a top-quality product. But, in my opinion, these guys are fanatics, not only about ensuring that every plow that comes off the line is top quality, but also in working to improve current products and to make even better new designs.
When I tell you they make plows at the Fisher factory, that’s no exaggeration. Most parts for the plows are designed on site by Fisher’s engineers and fabricated from raw materials right there in Rockland.

This is a big factory and when I visited it was jumping with activity. Fisher uses the team approach to making plows, using a system called value streaming. Basically this means that a group of people works together to build a given plow model. They are all responsible for making sure the plow is of the highest quality possible. >
But I think there is an extra element at work at Fisher. I happen to believe that sportsmen — hunters and anglers — are the best people there are. As I toured the Fisher plant, and asked so many questions about how the plows were made, the staff kept telling me their hunting and fishing adventures. Dedicated sportsmen are talented, serious people who take great pride in everything they do, including their jobs. These guys are committed to making Fisher Plows the best.
And speaking of that pride, while I was at the Fisher Factory, Greg Tedford presented me with a set of Value Streamer fishing flies that he had tied. I have to say that Greg Tedford is a superb fly tier and those flies were as well made a set of bucktails as I’ve ever seen.
So, here’s my take on Fisher. Great guys. Great plows. You can’t go wrong with their products.
